Many people do not stick to the old saying “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper” which is a terrible mistake, especially if you have diabetes. Breakfast is not only one of the main meals but it is one of the most important meals and should never be skipped for three reasons – it helps you control your blood sugar levels, it enables you to lose excess pounds and maintain a healthy body weight a lot easier, and it gives you the necessary energy for your daily activities.

Breakfast should be eaten every day by everyone not only diabetics but taking time for a healthy and nutritious breakfast is even more important if you have diabetes. It is important to be aware that diabetes management does not only require lowering of blood sugar levels to a normal range but it also requires maintenance of stable blood sugar levels. Fluctuations of blood glucose are dangerous as too low blood sugar which can occur if you skip an important meal such as breakfast may led to hypoglycaemia which can in worst case even be life-threatening. Too high blood sugar levels, on the other hand, put you at increased risk of developing potentially disabling and life-threatening diabetes complications. Skipping breakfast cannot raise your blood sugar levels, however, you are more likely to overeat for lunch if you do not eat your breakfast and this can cause your blood sugar levels raise higher than normally. But if you eat a diabetic breakfast, you significantly reduce the risk of fluctuations of your blood sugar levels in both ways.
Excess body weight is a major problem if you have diabetes and the sooner you reach a healthy body weight the easier you will control your blood sugar levels. Successful weight loss, however, requires reduction of your daily caloric intake. To be able to lose just one pound per week, you need to cut as many as 500 calories a day (this should be achieved by a combination of exercise and lower daily caloric intake). But this does not give you an excuse to skip your breakfast. The research has shown that people who eat their breakfast lose weight faster and easier than those who skip it. This is due to the fact that you will get more hungry by lunchtime which in turn makes it harder to control yourself at lunch. Furthermore, skipping breakfast has been shown to increase the risk of overeating which can seriously interfere with your efforts to lose weight.
The last but not the least important reason why you should always eat your diabetic breakfast is the fact that breakfast provides you energy you need to perform your morning activities. To be able to function normally, your body needs energy in the form of both calories and glucose. And if you eat your dinner at least three hours before you go to sleep, you burn a great deal of energy you have consumed before you fall asleep as well as while you are asleep. By the morning you this have insufficient levels energy to be able to function normally until lunchtime.
